Denver & the Mile High Orchestra to Perform Christmas Concert at Belmont University’s Troutt Theater to Benefit Eakin Elementary School’s Food and Clothing Closet

(NASHVILLE, Tennessee) – Belmont Heights is proud to present Denver & the Mile High Orchestra live in concert at 5:30pm on Sunday, December 13th at Troutt Theater on the campus of Belmont University in Nashville. The family-oriented Christmas-themed concert event will benefit Eakin Elementary School’s Food and Clothing Closet.

Admission is free with the donation of a food or clothing item. Seating is by reservation only. For information and reservations, email [email protected] or call 615-460-2422.  An email reply will be sent confirming the reservation and listing the items that the school’s food and clothing pantry is in need of.  Seating is limited to the first 300 who make a reservation.

Eakin Elementary School’s Food and Clothing Closet provides for students in need. No Metro funds are available for this kind of help, so the school depends on donations from businesses, churches, non-profits and individuals to help keep the closet stocked with food, personal hygiene items and clothing items.

The school also distributes food throughout the neighborhood in the summer – making sure that their students get the basic nutrition they need year round. During the summer months, items are distributed by teachers and their families who freely give of their time to help their students.

As an example of the needs within the school, Principal Dr. Timothy Drinkwine recently dealt with a student that was being disruptive, only to discover that the student had not eaten, and he hadn’t slept the night before because there was no heat at home.  The principal took the student to the school’s food closet to get the student some nutrition and allowed the student to rest. Once his basic needs were met, the student returned to class and did not disrupt again.

“The student was hungry and tired,” said Dr. Drinkwine. “These two things are not conducive to learning and can lead to problems in the classroom.”

Belmont Heights, a local church serving the 12 South and Hillsboro neighborhoods, partners with Eakin Elementary School to provide assistance in meeting student needs, as well as to help and encourage teachers – the unsung heroes in many student’s lives.

“We are partnering because we want to show love, compassion and encouragement to a foundational institution in our community – our neighborhood schools,” says Belmont Heights Pastor John Garner. “We want to encourage other churches and non-profits to get outside the walls and get involved in and with schools in their communities.
